Koensayr T-81c High-Speed Multirole Starfighter (D-wing) Originally developed by Incom after the departure of its X-Wing team and stolen by the Bel Iblis organization, the T-81 filled more or less the same role within the Bel Iblis organization as the B-wing does within the New Republic navy and the Skipray was suposed to in the Imperial Navy.. It is a high-speed starfighter designed with atmospheric combat and long-range strikes against hard targets on mind. It is, like the T-65 X-wing, based on the Z95 Headhunter used by so many during the times of the Republic. The difference is that a D-wing is generally a two or three seater, with pilot, gunner, and (for long missions) navigator/engineer on board. The Imperial Navy as a whole doesn't make much use of it, although it is known that the Pentastar Alignment, which for obvious reasons likes to stay as far away from imperial supply lines as possible, carries several flights of the Incom version for running blockades and hit-and-fade attacks. The typical mission profile for the T-81 is varied; although usable for escort purposes, the typical D-Wing crew is most commonly assigned to planetside first-strike roles where the high speed of the fighter's primitive scramjet engines outruns virtually everything else in atmospheric flight. It is fitted with three types of engines. The hyperdrive motivator is a beefed-up verson of the standard unit used on other Incom designs such as the T-65 X-Wing or the I-7 Howlrunner, and the ship's hull is studded with weaponry. The most obvious weapons are a pair of wing-mounted Sienar microturbolasers on the Koensayr models, but the ship also posesses close to a dozen blaster cannons (standard E-Web repeaters on stock models from both manufacturers) and a set of proton torpedo launchers (Arakyd Garral models have been standard on the first three shipments of 12 bought by the New Republic Navy from Koensayr, but the thirty Incom-built fighters brought in by General Bel Iblis (out of a lot of 62) were fitted with SoroSuub Gaffi torpedoes). D-Wing gunnery is definitely a specialized skill. The gunner sits behind the pilot with a rather poor view, so the gunner is fitted with a helmet that provides a wraparound view of the outside world. The weapons systems are crosslinked to each other to provide 360 degree weapons coverage such that the gun that's fired is the one that happens to shoot in the direction the gunner is looking. Although the setup is disorienting, D-Wing gunners quickly become proficient with the targeting system and the Imperial navy is almost as iffy about dealing with the T-81 as with a Republic B-wing. As mentioned, the T-81 is actually built by two manufacturers. Incom is still largely aligned with the Empire's various fragments; their model is a two-seater with armaments by BlasTech and SoroSuub and lacks the high-speed scramjets that the Koensayr models have mounted under the wings. The Koensayr model adds a **pair of turbolasers and the scramjets, and seats three over what is described by pilots as an icepack of a fueltank. In general, the Koensayr version is considered superior to the Incom original, with faster hyperdrive engines and more sophisticated weapons technology. The speed advantage it carries, plus the new contract with the Republic, has made Koensayr seriously consider dropping the BTL-A4 Y-Wing completely. The functional overlap between the D-Wing and the E-Wing/B-Wing mission domains is not lost on the Republic's fighter jocks. The D-Wing is expected to go into service more as a reconnaissance/hit-and-fade ship than the shock fighter it was used for by General Bel Iblis' private group. It is designed for atmospheric assault, offering a fairly significant chunk of functionality that no other fighter allows. The Sienar microturbolasers have enough atmospheric punch to justify the inclusion of what would otherwise be a horribly underpowered weapon, and the ship itself can take a brutal beating; more than one T-81 has survived an otherwise lethal ballistic reentry.
