     Now that the New Republic has gained a fairly solid grasp of
the core worlds, it has decided to expand it's actions out of the
space held by the Old Republic and the Empire.  To do so, it has
commissioned a fleet of 15 of the new Intrepid Cruisers. 
Designed for long term journeys to the furthest edges of the
galaxy, Intrepids are capable of prolonged flight without the
need for external maintenance.  Their mission profile is mainly
to present a good impression of the New Republic on native
civilizations around the galaxy.  In order to accomplish that
goal, they are equipped with a large number of maintenance and
decontamination droids, designed to help those civilizations that
need such help.
     Of course, as they are going through unexplored regions,
they are fairly heavily armed, and well capable of fighting off
weaker threats and running from the more powerful ones.  They are
also assigned to mapping and scientific exploration, and are
equipped with a number of devices to fill those two functions.
